Kocain Mağarası

A 633-metre-long cave and registered natural monument near Ahırtaş village in Döşemealtı. Ceiling heights reaching 80 metres in places and giant stalactites make it one of the largest cave volumes in Turkey.

Kocain Cave was discovered in 1919 and is registered as a natural monument. Its main gallery runs 633 metres with two large chambers, and the ceiling rises to 80 metres at some points. That scale gives you a cathedral-like feeling inside — a completely different experience from Antalya's show caves.

The stalactites and stalagmites are monumental in size. Readable inscriptions survive near the entrance, which is why the cave is thought to have been used for religious purposes in the early Christian period. Cistern remains and traces of walls are visible on the floor.

The cave has no tourist infrastructure: no lighting, no walkways, no ticket office. A dirt track continues to the entrance, and a torch is essential to go inside. Kocain therefore suits people after a sense of exploration rather than a guided cave tour. Being in the same area as Termessos and Karain, it slots into a mountain route.

Tips

  • There is no lighting; do not go in without a strong torch.
  • The floor is wet and uneven — shoes with grip are needed.
  • Can be planned on the same day as Karain Cave and Termessos.
