Köprülü Canyon Rafting Guide

· 6 min read

Köprülü Canyon, in Antalya's Manavgat district, is a national park that hosts Türkiye's best-known rafting course. Cut through the Taurus mountains by the Köprüçay river, the canyon draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year for both its scenery and the character of its water.

Season and water: The rafting season generally runs from late April to mid-October. In May and June, snowmelt keeps the flow high and the water cold, making for a livelier course. From July to September the water warms and the flow softens — the period preferred by beginners and families.

Difficulty: The standard 14-kilometre course is rated class II–III internationally: exciting, but requiring no technical experience. Non-swimmers can take part; life jacket, helmet and a professional guide are included on every tour. The usual minimum age is 7, though this varies between operators.

Duration and cost: Tours typically last half a day, with hotel transfer, equipment and lunch (usually a barbecue by the river) included. Day transfers are easy to find from central Antalya, Side, Belek and Alanya; travel time is one to two hours depending on where you start.

What to bring: You will get wet, so a change of clothes and a towel are essential. Bring sunscreen, a waterproof case or action camera, and sandals that stay on your feet (flip-flops are not suitable). Leave valuables in the vehicle; most operators provide a waterproof barrel.

What else is in the canyon: Beyond rafting, the most striking structure is the Roman-era Oluk Bridge, rising 27 metres above the rocky gorge. Standing for some 2,000 years, this single-arch stone bridge is the classic photo stop together with the turquoise water below. The park also holds hiking trails and the ruins of ancient Selge.

Tip: Book an early morning slot. The water is calmer and the crowds thinner; by the afternoon the area fills with tour coaches.
